History of the Château d’Aveny

The early days

On February 12, 1778, the Marquis de Broglie sold the lands, fiefs and lordship of Aveny to the Lady of Fayet. At that time, the castle built on the foundations of an eleventh century stronghold was in a pitiful state, the ground floor of the castle was as uninhabitable as a cellar, notes Alain de Fayet. So from 1779 to 1794 restoration work was carried out. In 1779, the large main building was raised, the wings to the east and west, the fence of the park and the large vegetable garden and the landscaped paths of the park. In 1781, construction of the stables and the dovecote. In 1783, paving of the courtyard. In 1787, development of the island of the mill. In 1793, construction of the large barn on the farm. It was almost a century later, after the war of 1870, that the Marquis Léon de Fayet rebuilt the two pavilions of the castle, raised the roofs and thus gave the whole its current silhouette. This castle was the residence of the Marquis de Fayet and then of the Robien family.

Pont d'Aveny

The Bridge of Aveny

Replacing an original wooden bridge, this structure was built between 1744 and 1746 by the engineer of Ponts et Chaussées Martinet. It is in freestone and has all the characteristics of 18th century bridges: bridge with basket-handle arches; triangular symmetrical front and rear beaks; cornice at the base of the parapet. The central arch was rebuilt in 1872-1873, then in 1911. The bridge has been closed to traffic since 1993.

Architecture

A classic example of 17th century architecture still in vogue in the 18th century, Aveny recalls the facade of the Château de Cheverny built in the mid-17th century, and … that of the famous Château de Moulinsart inherited by Captain Haddock.
